| Shinai:
Bamboo sword, made of four strips tapered
dried bamboo bound together with leather. The shinai is the
primary sword used in kendo practice and tournaments. Most kendo
practioners use only the long sword or tachi for practicing
kendo, using two swords the long (tachi) and the short (ko-dachi)
is allowed yet rarely used. |

Bokken
or Bokuto: Wood
sword closely matching the size and dimensions of a metal sword.
Used for practicing kendo kata and promotional exams. |

Katana:
Steel swords used only in kendo kata
demonstrations. |
