| Shinai:
The shinai or bamboo sword is a little
longer than the wood or metal sword used in kendo. The back
of the shinai blade area is designated by the cord (tsuru) that
holds the bamboo strips (take) together running along the top
edge of the shinai. |

Bokken
or Bokuto: The
wood sword resembles the metal sword in dimensions and form
and is generally made of Japanese oak, or other very hard woods. |

Katana:
The metal Japanese sword used in kendo
demonstrations. |
