How to tie a hakama knot:

1. The first step to tying a standard hakama knot is to cross the two ends of the remaining length of hakama himo over and around the back himo and in the front.

2. Pull both himos so that one end is on the top right and the other is on the lower left.

3. Bring the bottom left himo to the right making a loop and the top right himo down and through the loop you made with left himo.

4. Pull the two ends to make a tight knot

5. Fold each of the remaining ends into thirds and tuck either over the top or bottom edge of the lower himo.

6. The completed knot will look neat and the knot will not come untied while practicing.

How to tie a formal hakama knot:

1. Cross the two himo ends over and around the back himo and pull them to the front.

2. Pull the left himo out of way and fold the right himo into thirds.

3. Turn the folded left himo into a horizontal position and centered.

4. Bring the right himo over the left himo and down in front of the horizontal himo.

5. Wrap the horizontal himo with the front right himo one time, then bring a portion of the right himo down and in back of the horizontal himo so that it looks like an equal third of the himo.

6. Fold and tuck the remaining himo into the back center of the knot.

7. The finished knot should look symmetrical, all the sections of the knot should be equal in dimensions.
